Mica refers to a group of aluminium silicate minerals exhibiting a two-dimensional sheet or layer structure. These can be split into thin elastic sheets which is probably the most widely recognized characteristic of the micas.
The most commonly used Mica is Muscovite Mica. It is the lightest coloured mica mineral and can be easily cleaved into thin sheets. It incombustible, has low heat conductivity, high dielectric resistance, great dielectric strength, excellent thermal stability and may be exposed to high temperatures and hence suitable for manufacturing specialized parts for electrical equipment. It is inert to action of acids and chemicals.
Dry ground mica is used in rolled roofing which serves as a surface coating and wet ground mica is used in cosmetics and paint to provide a colored shiny surface giving high luster. Mica powder in various forms is used in decoration and for glittering purposes.
In industrial applications, mica can be transformed into coarse, medium and fine varieties of flakes and powder depending on the various applications of mica. We supply high quality Mica flakes ranging from 2 mesh to 30 mesh and Mica powder in various sizes tailoring to the customer’s needs.
Mica flakes are used by Christmas tree flockers, candle designers, floral designers, scrap bookers, wedding designers, artists and crafters to produce shimmering and glittering effects. These are used in decorative coatings on wallpaper, concrete, stucco, and tile surfaces.
Mica is used as an additive to drilling mud preventing loss of circulation and seepage. It is a good sealant as the platy structure of mica facilitates overlapping of particles to form a sealed layer which contributes to regain circulation.
The calcium carbide manufactures generally prefer lime containing 95% CaO (min.), not more than 3% SiO2, not exceed 2%.
Mica is used in pearlescent pigments which creates lustrous or opalescent effects. It consistes of natural mica flakes coated with titanium dioxide . Pearlescent pigments are widely used in the cosmetic industry to add luster, sparkle, impart color or color-travel effects, and provide coverage. These are widely applied in plastics, cosmetics, automobiles coatings among others.
Mica flakes is largely used in various paints like car varnishes, exterior paints, anti corrosive paints, paint for road markings, oil based metal primers. Itis a reinforcing agent which reduces cracking and peeling and acts as a great inorganic filler in coatings. The inclusion of mica in road and highway paints improves wearability, gives good adhesion, and reduces flaking and cracking resulting in improved adhesion and better weathering. The ability of mica plates to overlap and to bridge openings is used for penetration control in sealers for porous surfaces. Other typical filler uses are in floor and porch paints, heat-resistant paints, and traffic paints.
The pearly luster of ground mica , which addsshimmer and sparkle, makes it an ideal ingredient in blushes, eyeliner, eye shadow, foundation, hair and body glitter, lipstick, lip gloss, mascara, and nail polish as it is no-toxic and totally inert. It is also popular in skincare products designed to create a glow effect, particularly those marketed as brightening or illuminating.
Mica is widely used in rubber industry as an inert filler and mold release agent in the manufacture of molded rubber products such as tires and roofing. The platy grains of mica act as an anti sticking and anti friction agent. The use of mica helps to increase the hardness, tensile strength and tear resistance of rubber products. It improves the resilence and appearance of rubber articles.
Mica is primarly used as an insulation material. Mica insulation is used in high? temperature and fire?resistant power cables in aluminium plants, blast furnaces, critical wiring circuits (for example, defense systems, fire and security alarm systems, and surveillance systems), heaters and boilers, lumber kilns, metal smelters, and tanks and furnace wiring. It is also widely used in manufacturing of welding electrodes as it provides two types of coating. Firstly, it serves in orming a fusible slag and a good seal at the fusion zone on the arc. Secondly, it resists the action of heat, gaseous and other surrounding atmospheric oxidization.
The auto industry uses mica to improve the performance of plastic parts. In plastics, particles of ground mica serve as an agent to absorb sound and vibration. It can also mixed with various thermoplastic polymeric materials and thermosetting resins which enhances strength, stiffness and wrinkling of materials.
The primary use of ground mica is in joint compound between panels of wallboards, as well as, in the finished coating of ceilings in building constructions, because of its many functional surface characteristics which acts as a cost effective filler and surfacing agent. High heat resistance, excellent mechanical and thermal strength, low moisture absorption, high surface leakage resistance, unusual chemical resistance and non-hygroscopic properties of mica improves the workability of the compound, and reduces cracking in the finished product.
Muscovite mica powder is widely used as a filler in non-asbestos acoustic products for treatment of automobile under-bodies and noise protection systems . The addition of mica in acoustic compounds improves its material properties significantly, such as, improve heat and UV resistance, increase tensile and flexural strengths, reduce isotropic shrinkage and permeability, enhance the dielectric and insulating properties, better surface properties.
Mica particles are stronger than iron and are not brittle like other inert inert material. It serves to reinforce, stiffen, harden and strengthen the product and prevent microscopic ruptures, reduce warping, lower thermal expansion and conductivity. During the mixing process, the use of mica helps to achieve a more homogeneous mix. Due to platy nature and surface characteristics of mica, it tends to lock together under compression during wet or dry, cold or hot processes to form an effective platform for the matrix of other materials in the formulation. As such, the benefit of mica for use as friction materials for asbestos-free brake linings, brake shoes, clutch discs, etc. is well recognised.
Dry-ground mica is used as a surface coating on asphalt shingles and rolled roofing. The flat mica particles coat the surface and act as an antisticking agent. The mica does not absorb the asphalt and stands up well to weathering.
