Wollastonite

Wollastonite, chemically known as CaSiO3, through advanced processing, has become one of the most versatile minerals and a reinforcement agent in the industry.

It is composed of 48.3% of calcium (CaO) and 57.2% of silicon and oxygen (SiO2, silica) and contains trace amounts of iron, magnesium, manganese, aluminum, potassium, sodium, or strontium substituting for calcium in the mineral structure.

It is usually white but also may be gray, cream, brown, pale green, or red depending on its impurities and grain size.

RMR offers a range of Wollastonite in different sizes which increases the performance parameters of the products such as ceramics, construction material, plastics , paints to name a few. Natural wollastonite fibres provide a relatively low-cost alternative to other reinforcement fibres for cement systems which are usually not found with conventional additives.

Salient Features :

• High brightness and whiteness
• Low loss on ignition
• Melting point of 1540 C
• Alkaline and Inert

• Low co-efficient of linear thermal expansion
• Excellent dielectric properties
• Low water solubility

Uses :

• Paints and Coatings : As an additive, it increases the durability of the paint film, increases weather resistance, reduces gloss, reduces pigment consumption and acts as a smoothing and suspending agent.
• Metallurgical : Wollastonite is used during steel casting and welding . As it is a natural and low temperature flux , it prevents oxidation of the steel, lubricates the mold wall, maintains surface defects and absorbs harmful inclusions.
• Plastics : Wollastonite increases tensile and bending strength, enhances electrical insulating properties , imparts fire resistance and improves dimensional stability adding to the performance of plastics.
• Construction : Instead of asbestos , wollastonite is used in fire-resistant building products as it improves flexural and impact strengths . It also finds application in interior and exterior construction boards, roof tiles, shaped insulation products, sheets, panels and sidings as it is resistant to chemical attack.
• Ceramics : Wollastonite is used in a range of applications in ceramics as it reduces shrinkage and gas formation , maintains brightness, reduces crazing, cracking and glaze defects during rapid heating and cooling resulting in smooth surface.
• Friction : Wollastonite is used as a reinforcing additive in many friction applications such as truck blocks, drum linings and disc pads which improves pre-form strength, eliminates cracking and reduces noise as well as the friction stability thus slashing the unit cost.
